There are plenty of places that the United States Navy calls home – both stateside and abroad. But in this blog post, we’re going to concentrate on just two of these places and let you know a little bit more about them…
Place #1: The United States Naval Academy
Training happens all over the place for the Navy. But the official training and educational grounds for the Navy is located at the United States Naval Academy located in Annapolis, Maryland. It’s here that Naval trainees get their 4-year (or more) instruction before they graduate and move on to their various assignments.
Created in 1845 (as noted in the picture above) by then Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, the Naval Academy is the second-oldest of the five U.S. service academies. As for the campus, its situated at a majestic location right next to the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay. The Naval Academy is also a short drive away from the nation’s Capitol – about 33 miles to be exact.
Lastly, the entire campus is considered a National Historic Landmark. Can you say that about your current school or Alma Mater? If you’d like to learn more about the Naval Academy including admission requirements, enrollment, and more, you can visit its website by clicking here.
Place #2: Naval Base San Diego
As we mentioned above, there are a number of naval bases and seaports that are ran by the U.S. Navy. But the most important, prestigious, and largest of these naval bases is none other than the Naval Base San Diego.
Considered the “principal” homeport for the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, Naval Base San Diego usually houses and operates 55 Navy ships, 2 Coast Guard cutters, the Military Sealift Command logistical support platform(s), and a number of research vessels year-round. On top of all that, the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), which is considered the best fleet platform the U.S. Navy has to offer, is also docked at the San Diego base.
As for the dimensions of the base, it stretches over 2,000 acres of land and 326 acres of Pacific Ocean water. If you’d like to visit and take a tour of the Naval Base San Diego or just want to learn more about it, click here to visit its website.
Final Thought
In ending, we would really like to encourage you to visit the websites of the Naval Base San Diego and the Naval Academy. Even if you’re not interested in joining the Navy or attending school there, its always great to learn more about and gain an appreciation for one of our country’s service academies.
